Truck Driver Health and Wellness Tips: First Time On The Job

Truck Driver Health | Thunder Funding

Starting a new job can be one of life’s more challenging transitions. Not surprising is the fact that self care is one of the first personal “luxuries” to be sacrificed while acclimating to a new position. And, if there’s one bit of advice we can share with those starting a career in trucking, it’s to put your health and wellness first.

In our humble opinions, drivers who are committed to their health and put exercise and good eating first often have longer, more satisfying careers and personal lives. Healthier people are just happier. Go figure.

Make A Food Plan And Make It Fun

Take a moment to plan your daily (and weekly!) meals ahead of time rather than leaving food options up to convenience and chance. Keep a large water bottle at your side and flavor it with a couple of slices of lemon, watermelon, or cucumber for a tasty and refreshing change. Crunchy almonds and carrots make a great, no-mess snack that’s nutritious and easy to eat. Pre-peeled hard boiled eggs, grapes, strawberries, and celery sticks are also good snack options. All these healthy snacks conveniently packed in your cooler means you don’t have to wait until you’re starving and at a truck stop (where you’re more likely to order fast food) to finally chow down.

Move It Along

According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, sitting is the new smoking. In other words, sitting for too long without any movement is a risk factor for your health. But, as a truck driver, that’s what you do for a living -- sit. So, what now? Our best advice is to plan to move around as much as you can before you start your route, while you’re on a break, and at the end of your day. We’re not saying you need a fancy gym with complicated equipment. Pack a jump rope or some resistance bands and tubing. Do jumping jacks, sit ups, and push ups. Walk around your truck. Find a mall to walk around in while you window shop. Or, if the weather is nice, find a nice and easy trail and enjoy the fresh air.

Trucker Health And Long Term Benefits

Whether you work to provide for your family or you’re single and just starting out in your trucking career, your health has a huge impact on your ability to make money and earn a living. Avoid injuries and preventable illnesses by putting your health and wellness first. You’ll be glad you did.
